  1. Throughout the years people have used different ways to 
  2. describe files available for anonymous ftp.  that has never
  3. been standardized ever.  no reason to believe it ever will
  4. be.

  6. If we are going to come up with a special kind of document
  7. that refers to a new document type that has the semantics
  8. of "pointer to file available for anonymous ftp", then it
  9. should be assigned a WAIS type tag, described, and specified.
  10. I'd suggest the tag AFTP.  Someone write a spec, we'll all
  11. write code, & be done with it.  (There's plenty of data after
  12. all.)  It would be better to do that rather than to use a TEXT
  13. type tag and bicker about the format.

  15. I don't think it would be hard for the WWW gateway to WAIS to
  16. do special things to documents if they had a different type,
  17. and then use that to convert AFTP type documents to WWW format.
  18. Ditto gopher, archie, etc. clients.

  20. If it's TEXT, on the other hand, it can be *anything*.  Please
  21. don't overload the semantics of the name of the server or the 
  22. accidental formatting of the contents of the document.  I would
  23. like to create AFTP records to stick into many servers.
